Special Presentation
Dr. Ashley Gordon – Keeping children healthy – Naturopathic doctor speaking about strengthening the immune system for cold/flu season. Naturopathy works complementarily with medicine, and the main principle is to work to strengthen the body’s natural defenses. It is involved with treating the root of the problem, rather than just the symptoms and trying to avoid side effects associated with pharmaceutical treatment. Prevention of disease is also very important. The diet is key. Naturopathy also utilizes the science of acupuncture, Eastern medicine, and herbal medicines. Homeopathy is included in Naturopathy and relates to using very dilute amounts of elements as remedies.
Some things that tend to influence our immune system include diet, stress, sleep, hygiene, dehydration, exposure to sunlight, routine, regular exercise, mental health, digestive problems, food sensitivities/intolerances. How can we strengthen our immune system? Hydrate with approximately 2 litres of water per day. Regular sleep, especially the hours before midnight. It has been said that every hour before midnight, is as important as two hours after midnight – this is due to the release of certain hormones before midnight, namely growth hormone that restores and regenerates our bodies. Exercise is also important. In terms of food: lowering sugar intake, ensuring adequate protein in the diet, cutting out “white food” (pasta, potatoes, rice, bread, etc.), having a variety of colors of fruits and veggies, eating good fats vs. bad fats (fish, avocados, olive oil) Regular handwashing is also important. Managing stress is important, as much as possible, through things such as exercise, meditation, yoga, massage, counseling. Some important supplements to help in the winter season: Vit C, Omega 3’s, Vit D, B Vitamins. Echinacea and oil of Oregano(Cold FX) can also be used at the first signs of illness. Routine is important, as well as getting out in the fresh air as often as possible. Dr Gordon does testing for food sensitivities, through blood work and Vega testing (electro-dermal). One question brought up was whether there is any truth to eating for your blood type.
Minutes of Last Meeting
Motion to pass last month’s minutes made by Sally, seconded by Isabel.
Executive Reports
Treasurer Report – Mandy – some money may be left in the gaming grant that needs to be spent. Annemarie to follow up.
DPAC Report – Sandy – April 25th is next meeting at Valleycliffe, at 6:30pm. Two people have expressed interest in providing workshops: Liz Barrett from Jump Math and someone from Parenting/Friends for Life.
Hot Lunch – Georgina - coming up next Thursday
Fruit & Veggie Program – Yvonne – apples much appreciated
Carnival Report – by Sandy – date is May 4th, from 5 to 8pm. We need to have a space to put items that we’re collecting…the PAC room is the best idea as it can be locked. As well, we would like to put a box in the hallway for items donated to the carnival. This will be cleared away by the carnival committee members periodically. Nesters donated all the food last year, Tims’ donated doughnuts at half price that were sold at the bake sale. The next Carnival meeting will be Feb 1, 6 to 7pm. Finally, the food permit needs to be applied for at VCCH.
Fundraising
DDA – Cash for Clothes – will coincide with Spring cleaning, and we may end up doing it as a joint effort with Stawamus Elementary. We can have a count for each school and split the money accordingly. This will help us to make more money with more bags collected.
Fitness Fundraiser – may end up in February. People have been lined up and more info will be forthcoming.
Wealthy School Revolution – this is ongoing and thus far, we have raised about $300 so far.
Business
Looking for someone to take care of Valleycliffe PAC Facebook page. It needs to be updated with posting of the agenda, the subsequent minutes and any announcements. Best to have more than one person involved.
